“This year, the gap between lyrical rappers and [insert your choice of antonym here] rappers was wider than ever. There was a shift in the energy of most young up-and-comers, but a few proved that technical rap skills and smart lyricism are still effective. One of the most impressive in 2017 was Atlanta’s J.I.D. He can rap with the best of them, but songs like “NEVER” still go off in a live setting, and for hip-hop fans that aren’t impressed by simple formulas involving loud bass and repetitive hooks, it was nice to have some fresh talent with more to offer—and to see them receive the attention they deserve.—Jacob Moore”

The Never Story Makes Billboard Top 20 Rap Albums For 2017
Wrapping up the year the gifts keep coming. Fresh off an amazing year filled with music and tours billboard magazine highlights #TheNeverStory on the top 20 list of rap albums for the year.
“With a sing-song style and tone reminiscent of Anderson .Paak, J.I.D is one of the most talented additions to J. Cole’s Dreamville roster. His debut, The Never Story, was released to insufficient fanfare in March, letting the 27-year-old Atlanta native become an artist that listeners can feel like they’ve discovered. Over warm production, more Dungeon Family than Metro Boomin, J.I.D lets the world in on his story, his blues. Standout tracks like “Hereditary” and “All Bad” find J.I.D in a particularly melancholy pocket; on the latter, he explains to a girlfriend, “If I’m trying to tell the truth, it’s all bad.” Luckily for the listener, it sounds very good. – R.S.”

“When I’m creating I don’t want nobody to be around me. I know it’s going to sound crazy coming out, and I don’t want to think about somebody else’s opinion. I might think about what somebody said to me for the next three days. I overthink and second guess myself a lot – but usually if I’m doing it by myself and I get to the finished product, they love it every time.”
